COMMUNITY CENTRES

Interactionz provides a day service at community centres based in Chartwell, Hamilton East and Dinsdale. The centres are open from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.

Each centre uses person driven practice to ensure that people have as much control as possible over their lives especially decisions made about their interactions at the centre. There is a collaborative relationship between the centre, the people, their families and whanau and significant others.

One of the main reasons for establishing community centres was to enable adults with disabilities to have the opportunity to meet within the communities they live in.

People go there to catch up socially and develop skills which enable them to meet their own goals. The focus is on personal development and community membership. The types of activities people may choose include: recreation and leisure, socialisation, daily living skills, education and learning, exercise and fitness, and vocational and work experience.

Many of the twenty people linked to each centre are in part time paid employment in a range of vocations around town, so ease of access is an important factor. Therefore, the centres are on the Orbiter bus route, close to the people's work and homes, and located in residential areas.

"What we offer at the centres will make it easier for individuals to choose their own direction and gain whatever skills will let them live their life in a way that has meaning to them," says Lynda Millington, Interactionz' Cheif Executive.
